FCC: Catalyst for Innovation?

The left is in favor of complete regulation of everything, and that includes the Internet as highlighted in this nauseating op-ed from the New York Times. One particular statement caught my attention:

The F.C.C. at the time argued that a light regulatory touch would foster alternative technologies and aggressive competition among providers.
Isn't the Internet an alternative technology, borne from the unregulated minds of industrious men? And what sector of the economy is more competitive than the Internet? Dozens of Internet providers using several different technologies, millions upon millions of websites, dozens of browsers. Would regulators have made the leap from dial-up to cable? From hard-wired to wi-fi? Advanced to DSL, Fios, 3G... And "light regulatory touch" is oxymoronic. Controls breed controls and before long the Internet will become static. The only alternative technologies and aggressive competition it would foster would be ones that would attempt to circumvent their regulations. The regulators produce nothing - in fact they produce less than nothing by stifling those who do produce. They are a net drag on the economy. And that which they wish to regulate is already regulated - by the market. At one point AOL was the giant of the booming Internet business. Where are they now? On the scrap heap of history, left in the dust by consumers who wanted more than AOL was offering but others were eager to offer. There was no regulation necessary for someone to compete with AOL,just the ideas of innovators and the investments of businessmen.
