I did the 5K WOD from Wednesday on Saturday morning up in the Santa Rosa Mountains. The last 5K I did was in Huntington Beach on a route that is relatively flate and the weather was much warmer. My time was 27:19 then. Yesterday was pretty cold in the morning and there is a dramatic elevation change. So, with those excuses...

HSPU, TtB, Cleans
Yesterday's WOD, done today (with tweaks):
As many rounds as possible in 20 minutes of:
hand stand push ups, 5 reps
toes to bar, 10 reps,
30 pound barbell squat clean, 15 reps
I was aiming for 5 rounds...
5 rounds. The HSPU's were pretty weak; I can't get the full range of motion (top of head at bar/floor level).

The Green's Ultimate Hero
Via MisesInstitute:
Genghis Khan has been branded the greenest invader in history – after his murderous conquests killed so many people that huge swathes of cultivated land returned to forest.
The Mongol leader, who established a vast empire between the 13th and 14th centuries, helped remove nearly 700 million tons of carbon from the atmosphere, claims a new study.
The deaths of 40million people meant that large areas of cultivated land grew thick once again with trees, which absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Did We Get the Message?
Did Obama get his message across in his State of the Union speech? I know the message I received, and it was loud an clear. He wants to spend more, regulate more and centrally plan more. He wants to drive the economy deeper into the ground and to take our freedom with it.
Thruster, Pull Ups, Box Jumps
My version of today's killer WOD:
Five rounds, each for time of:
115 pound Thruster, 5 reps
10 Pull-ups
10 box jumps, 22"
Rest 1 minute
This was prescribed for ten rounds - who has time for that?! I'm completely gassed after five. My fastest round was 1:08 and the slowest was 1:55.

Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission: "Duh"
Leave it to government bureaucrats to come to a conclusion four years after the rest of us. But of course their reasoning for the financial crisis to have been "avoidable" is way off-base. How could a lack of regulation be to blame when the entire economy is micro-managed by central planners? Who could take this commission seriously with a statement like this:
It says the low interest rates brought about by the Fed after the 2001 recession; Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the mortgage finance giants; and the "aggressive homeownership goals" set by the government as part of a "philosophy of opportunity" were not major culprits. [emphasis mine]
Not major culprits? It's this type of analysis that has now plagued us with Dodd-Frank.

The Age of Oprah
A great one from Dr. Hurd:
"Who was Oprah?" future people will ask. She was the lady who preached personal fulfillment, made vast sums of money in a capitalist system, and then used that money and influence to help elect the most socialist President in American history. The Age of Oprah, rational historians will conclude, was the age of contradiction. Americans cheered the financial success of a woman under capitalism, a woman who helped ensure that system's downfall.
